S for S begins visit to Wellington (with photos)

     The Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, began his visit to Wellington, New Zealand, on the afternoon of June 16 (Wellington time), during which he met his counterparts to update them on the latest developments in Hong Kong.

     On arrival, Mr Lai called on the Acting Chair of the Immigration and Protection Tribunals, Mr Martin Treadwell. Mr Lai was briefed on the asylum screening system in New Zealand. Mr Lai then called on the Minister for Civil Defence, Ms Nikki Kaye, receiving a briefing on New Zealand's co-ordinated approach and capability to manage and respond to disasters.

     Today (June 17, Wellington time), Mr Lai met the Deputy Chief Executive of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and Head of Immigration New Zealand, Mr Nigel Bickle. They exchanged views on matters of common concern, including the admission scheme for talent. Mr Lai then visited the National Crisis Management Centre where he was briefed by the Director of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, Mr John Hamilton, on the disaster rescue facilities.

     In the afternoon, Mr Lai attended a luncheon hosted by the Minister for Police, Ms Anne Tolley, during which he briefed his New Zealand counterparts on the latest law and order situation in Hong Kong. During his stay in Wellington, Mr Lai also paid a courtesy call on the Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr Wang Lutong.

     Mr Lai will proceed to visit Canberra and Melbourne in Australia from June 18 to 20.
