12 private properties receive Gold Awards for best landscape design and maintenance (with photos)
************************************************************

The winners of the Best Landscape Award for Private Property Development 2014 were announced at a prize presentation ceremony today (June 12). Twelve private properties with outstanding landscape design and quality horticultural maintenance received Gold Awards.

In addition to the 12 Gold Awards, 36 Merit Awards were given at the ceremony to commend organisations for their efforts in greening and to enhance public awareness of green issues.

Launched in 2000, the Best Landscape Award is held once every two years. It aims to sustain the betterment of the living environment in private property and to promote greening through outstanding landscape design and horticultural maintenance.

After consulting professional bodies and organisations, several changes were made to the arrangements this year. The soft landscape design category and the horticultural maintenance category have been combined, while the category "Properties up to 10 years of age" has been divided into two, namely "Properties up to five years of age" and "Properties between six and 10 years of age", so that properties of similar ages can compete for awards.

The panel of jurors consisted of representatives from the organiser and co-organisers, horticulturists and representatives from environmental organisations. This year's competition received 190 nominated entries.

The soft landscape designs of the winning projects are visually appealing and demonstrate how professionals can add quality green elements to properties. The designs show consideration for not only the display of green features and sustainability, but also enhancement of urban living. Property management and maintenance professionals have also formulated comprehensive landscape maintenance plans and kept good care of the landscaping when offering quality greening areas to residents or users.

Officiating at the award ceremony, which was held at the Hong Kong Central Library Exhibition Gallery today, were the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung; the Patron of the Institute of Horticulture (Hong Kong), Sir David Akers-Jones; the Chairman of the Professional Green Building Council, Professor Choy Kin-kuen; the Vice President of the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, Mr Paul Chan; the Vice President of the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies, Mr Andrew Lee; the Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Mr Marvin Chen; and the Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, Mr Thomas Ho.

The Best Landscape Award was organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), and co-organised by the Home Affairs Department, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, the Institute of Horticulture (Hong Kong), the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, the Professional Green Building Council and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies.
