Man jailed for stealing mail from letterboxes
*********************************************

A 46-year-old man was convicted of offences relating to stealing mails and sentenced to an imprisonment of four years in the District Court today (May 20).

The Court heard that the man was seen by a local resident prizing open letterboxes with a metal ruler to steal items of mail in a residential building in Mei King Street, Hung Hom in August 2013.

Investigation revealed the man had already stolen 472 items of mail. Before Police arrival, the resident intercepted the man, who offered $500 to the former for letting him go. The man was subsequently arrested.

Police also found on the arrestee 3.42 grams of a dangerous drug (¡§ice¡¨) and one Hong Kong identity card belonging to another.

The man was charged with theft, trafficking in a dangerous drug, possession of an identity card relating to another person, and doing an act tending and intended to pervert the course of justice. He pleaded guilty to all four charges on May 16.

The Court recognised the serious nature of these offences, in particular the stealing of mail from letterboxes. Police remind members of the public to be vigilant for their mails in the letterboxes and should report promptly any suspicious activities at or near letterboxes.
