Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a female medical ward, the spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (May 19):

     Three more patients (aged 20 to 74) in the ward were confirmed today to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci carriers following contact tracing, without clinical symptoms. Two of them are still being hospitalised under isolation treatment and are in stable condition. The remaining one has been discharged.

     The Infection Control Team has adopted enhanced infection control measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
