The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 15) the May 2014 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2013" and "Tourism Satellite Account for Inbound Tourism of Hong Kong".
"The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2013"
The labour market remained generally tight in 2013. With the strong labour demand, the number of employed persons increased from 3 720 200 in the first quarter (Q1) of 2013 to 3 760 400 in the fourth quarter (Q4). The size of the labour force also increased from 3 852 700 in Q1 2013 to 3 878 800 in Q4 2013. Because the growth of employed persons was faster than that of labour force, the number of unemployed persons decreased from 132 500 in Q1 2013 to 118 400 in Q4 2013. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 3.5% in Q1 2013 to 3.3% in the second quarter and further down to 3.2% in Q4. This feature article provides an analysis of the unemployed population in 2013 from various perspectives. It aims to give readers a better understanding about the unemployed population in Hong Kong.

"Tourism Satellite Account for Inbound Tourism of Hong Kong"
Inbound tourism plays an important role in the economy of Hong Kong. Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) is an effective statistical framework for measuring the economic contribution of tourism. This feature article describes the major results of TSA for Hong Kong's inbound tourism in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.
