The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (May 14) visited HKMA David Li Kwok Po College in Mong Kok to watch a training session given by the Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS) and see for himself the training mode it uses. The MUSS training was introduced as part of the HKJC School Football Development Scheme that was launched last year. More than 80 schools applied to join the scheme, of which 15 were shortlisted.

Mr Tsang said, "This football development scheme provides training for both students and teachers at these schools, and gives both football players and trainers an opportunity to receive world-class soccer coaching. I believe that under the MUSS programme the standards of the trainees will be greatly enhanced. Outstanding members of the training sessions will also be offered further training and this will help to improve football development in Hong Kong."

Mr Tsang pointed out that the training session led by one of Manchester United's former top strikers, Dwight Yorke, would certainly benefit attendees. He added that with his experience of playing a leading role in professional football, Mr Yorke offered a great learning opportunity for rookie football players.

The Home Affairs Bureau has all along been committed to promoting sports development. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department provides regular funding to national sports associations to implement the School Sports Programme annually, aiming to encourage secondary, primary and special school students to participate in sports activities regularly at their schools during their leisure time. Over $17 million of funding was allocated to the programme during the year 2013-14.

In addition, the Home Affairs Bureau and the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation jointly launched the Pilot Scheme for Student Athlete Support last year. More than 360 schools have participated in the scheme and some schools have already submitted annual reports for evaluation.
