LCSD's museums and local cultural institutions open for free this weekend

     International Museum Day 2014, Hong Kong (IMD 2014, HK) will be held this weekend (May 17 and 18). On these two days, 42 participating local cultural institutions, including the museums under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), will offer free admission to the public.

     On the museum open days, visitors will be able to visit most of the latest thematic exhibitions for free, including the exhibition "Ming and Qing Chinese Arts from the C. P. Lin Collection" in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, where 270 Ming and Qing dynasty artworks from the collection of veteran local collector Mr Peter C P Lin will be showcased, including precious objects like exquisite porcelains, rare jades, iridescent painted enamels and glass works.

     Visitors who wish to understand more about local history should not miss "The Aftermath of the First Sino-Japanese War: The Lease of the New Territories and Weihaiwei" being staged in the Hong Kong Museum of History. Through displaying more than 100 artefacts related to Sir James Stewart Lockhart, a former Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong, the exhibition focuses on the lease of Hong Kong's New Territories and Weihaiwei in Shandong after the First Sino-Japanese War, and explains how the British government developed its administrative system in Weihaiwei by drawing on governing experience in the New Territories.

     A specially designed IMD Yo Yo Memo Pad will be offered to visitors at the participating museums and venues who collect four different stamps on a guide map. The Hong Kong Museum of Art will give out soft ice creams to visitors who purchase special exhibition admission tickets during "Surprise Treat @ 2-5pm".
 
     The 42 participating local cultural institutes comprise the Hong Kong Museum of Art and its branch; the Hong Kong Museum of History and its branches; the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and its branches; the Hong Kong Science Museum; the Hong Kong Space Museum; the Hong Kong Film Archive; the Conservation Office; the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre; the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery cum Heritage Trail Visitors Centre; the Art Promotion Office and Oi!; the Museum of Ethnology; the Asia Society Hong Kong Center; the Tung Wah Museum; the Po Leung Kuk Museum; the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong; the Stephen Hui Geological Museum of the University of Hong Kong; the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the Hong Kong Design Institute Gallery; the Hong Kong Maritime Museum; the Dr & Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University; the Hong Kong Museum of Education of the Hong Kong Institute of Education; the Hong Kong Racing Museum; the Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre; the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences; the Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum; the City Gallery; kaitak, the Centre for Research and Development in Visual Arts; the Lions Nature Education Centre of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department; the Tao Heung Museum of Food Culture; the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change; the Jao Tsung-I Academy; and the Police Museum.

     Admission at most of the participating institutes will be free of charge this weekend, except for the Hong Kong Museum of Art Special Exhibition "Ju Ming - Sculpting the Living World", the Hong Kong Heritage Museum Special Exhibition "Studio Ghibli Layout Designs: Understanding the Secrets of Takahata and Miyazaki Animation", the Stanley Ho Space Theatre of the Hong Kong Space Museum and film programmes at the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive. The Hong Kong Maritime Museum will provide free admission for seniors aged 60 and above and children under 18; adults will enjoy a 50 per cent discount. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre will be closed on Sunday.

     The International Council of Museums in 1977 designated May 18 each year as International Museum Day. Since 2001, the LCSD has annually held IMD, HK in mid-May with the aim of raising public awareness of the roles and functions of museums in society.

     With the theme "Museum Collections Make Connections", IMD 2014, HK emphasises that it is important for museums to revamp traditional methods of presenting their collections so as to remain in touch with the public and to create bonds between visitors, generations and cultures from around the world.
