The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, continued his official visit to Myanmar today (May 13).

Mr So arrived Yangon last night (May 12) after attending the ASEAN Leadership Forum in Nay Pyi Taw. This morning, he visited the site of a redevelopment project involving a Hong Kong listed company. As part of the project, the former Myanmar Railway Company building, a heritage landmark, will be turned into a hotel located in the central business district of Yangon.

Later on, Mr So met with the President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr Win Aung. They exchanged views on various issues including the business opportunities and economic outlook in Myanmar.

Mr So also visited a garment manufacturing company owned by a Hong Kong businessman. The visit enabled Mr So to understand the latest development of the clothing industries in the country, and the business opportunities available to Hong Kong companies.

Before concluding his trip, Mr So met with prominent business leaders to learn more about the investment environment there.

"Myanmar has huge development potential and ample investment opportunities given its abundant land, manpower and natural resources.

"The Hong Kong business community has been investing in Myanmar for many years, and continues to show interest in Myanmar. Hong Kong is now one of the major sources of foreign direct investment into Myanmar.

"I hope the economic and investment ties between Hong Kong and Myanmar could be further strengthened, bringing economic benefits to both sides," Mr So said.

Mr So will be back in Hong Kong tomorrow afternoon (May 14).
