Case of Legionnaires' disease under CHP investigation

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (May 13) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) affecting a 68-year-old man.

     The patient, with underlying illnesses, lives alone in Shenzhen. He presented with lower limb weakness and he slipped and fell at his home in Shenzhen on April 24. He returned to Hong Kong on April 25 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital on the same day. He developed fever on April 26 and was discharged on May 7. The clinical diagnosis was pneumonia. His current condition is stable.

     His serum sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antibody upon laboratory testing by the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the CHP.

     The CHP's investigations are proceeding.

     This is the 10th LD case reported to the CHP this year. In 2013 and 2012, 28 cases were filed in each year.
