Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Tung Wah Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (TWEH) made the following update today (May 13) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a geriatric ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. One more 77-year-old male patient was confirmed as a VRE carrier but without clinical symptoms. He is now under medical surveillance and isolation in stable condition.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health protection for necessary follow-up.
