DoJ to promote legal services forum in Shandong
***********************************************

The Department of Justice (DoJ) will lead a delegation of the legal and arbitration sectors to Shandong Province from today (May 13) to May 16 to promote Hong Kong's legal and arbitration services and the third Hong Kong Legal Services Forum (LSF), which will be held in Qingdao on September 16 this year.

Entitled "Hong Kong Legal Services - Think Global, Think Hong Kong", the LSF is part of the DoJ's ongoing efforts to enhance Hong Kong's status as one of the leading centres for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Solicitor General, Mr Peter Wong, will comprise representatives of the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (Asia Office), the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission Hong Kong Arbitration Center and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. These organisations are co-organisers of the forum.

During the four-day visit, the delegation will visit Jinan, Weifang and Qingdao and meet government officials and representatives of legal and arbitral bodies.

"With the rise of China as the world's key economic powerhouse, Mainland enterprises have become increasingly active in overseas markets and have a growing demand for high-end legal and dispute resolution services. With its world-class legal infrastructure and professionals engaging in diversified businesses with close links to the international community, Hong Kong can share its experience with the Mainland enterprises and legal sector through the LSF and help Mainland enterprises 'go global'," Mr Wong said.

The forum will bring together experienced practising barristers, solicitors and arbitrators in Hong Kong with abundant international exposure to explore various practical legal issues. A mock arbitration will be used to demonstrate dispute resolution by way of arbitration, and legal issues that Mainland enterprises may encounter in mergers and acquisitions will be examined through case studies. Marine arbitration and protection of intellectual property will also be discussed in the forum.

Details of the LSF are available from the following website: www.doj.gov.hk/legalservicesforum2014/eng/index.htm.
