Putting waste in its place
**************************

The Environment Bureau launched its Blueprint for Sustainable Use of Resources last May, urging people to "use less, waste less" to solve the city's waste-management problem.

But even if every Hong Kong resident follows the blueprint, there will still be the need to dispose of about 10 000 tonnes of waste a day in 2017. To cope, the city must expand its landfills and build an incinerator.

News.gov.hk spoke with Professor Irene Lo of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, who explained about the technologies in modern waste-to-energy incinerators that are clean and safe, and able to reduce the need for coal-generated electricity.

The story appears on news.gov.hk today (May 11) in both text and video format.
