Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a female medical ward, the spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (May 10):

     One more 82-year-old female patient in the ward was confirmed today to be a Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carrier following contact tracing, without clinical symptoms. She is still being hospitalised under isolation treatment and in stable condition.

     The Infection Control Team has adopted enhanced infection control measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.  The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
