Cluster of Clostridium Difficile toxin cases in Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital made the following announcement today (May 9):

     Four patients (aged 87 to 95) of a female medical ward presented with diarrhoea symptoms since April 21. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Clostridium Difficile toxin. The patients are being treated under isolation in stable condition.

     The Infection Control Team, the departments concerned and experts of the Centre for Health Protection discussed and decided to adopt the following enhanced infection control measures:

1. Applying stringent contact precautions;
2. Strongly encouraging visitors to perform hand hygiene and preventing close contact with patients;
3. Enhancing hand hygiene of staff; and
4. Enhancing environmental and equipment decontamination.
   
     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
