Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a female medical ward, the spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (May 2):

     Two more patients (aged 31 and 64) in the ward were confirmed today to be VRE carriers following contact tracing, both without clinical symptoms. One patient is still in hospital under isolation treatment and is in a stable condition. The other patient has been discharged.

     The Infection Control Team has adopted enhanced infection control measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
