Patients in Queen Elizabeth Hospital confirmed to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci carriers

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a female medical ward, the spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (May 1):

     Two more female patients (aged 61 and 88) in the ward were confirmed today to be VRE carriers following contact tracing, both  of them without clinical symptoms. They are still being hospitalised under isolation treatment and in stable condition.

     The Infection Control Unit has adopted enhanced infection control measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
