Clusters of Influenza A cases and Parainfluenza cases in Cheshire Home Shatin

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Cheshire Home Shatin made the following announcement today (April 30):

     Three patients (aged 28 to 60) in the male ward of a disabled unit have presented with fever or respiratory symptoms since April 28. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. Test results of the above patients were confirmed positive for Influenza A. The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

     In addition, regarding the earlier announcement of a cluster of patients infected with Parainfluenza Type 1 in an infirmary ward, one more 88-year-old female patient and two staff members had presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patient and the test result was confirmed positive for Parainfluenza Type 1. The patient has been transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital and is in a stable condition. The staff members concerned are now on sick leave.

     Admission and visiting to the above wards have been suspended. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the concerned ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
