Update on case of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae with OXA and NDM carbapenemase in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (April 29) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) carriers in a medical ward:

     The hospital has stepped up its screening procedures. One more 75-year-old male patient is confirmed as carrier of OXA and NDM carbapenemase-producing CRE today but without clinical symptoms. He was previously discharged and then later admitted to Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Tai Sin Hospital. The patient is now under medical surveillance and isolation in stable condition.

     The QEH will continue with the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
