Hongkong Post and the Antiquities and Monuments Office are jointly holding an exhibition titled ¡§A Journey through Hong Kong's Postal History - A Glimpse of Hong Kong's Postal History through the Old General Post Office Building (1911-1976)¡¨ at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre from April 30 to August 26. Admission is free for members of the public.
Officiating at today's (April 29) opening ceremony were member of the Executive Council and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Revitalisation of Historic Buildings, Mr Bernard Chan; the Postmaster General, Mrs Jessie Ting; and the Executive Secretary of the Antiquities and Monuments Office, Mr Tom Ming.
The exhibition showcases the old General Post Office (GPO) building that once stood at the junction of Des Voeux Road and Pedder Street. It also portrays the development of the local postal service from 1911 to 1976 when the building was in use, and reflects on the social changes during the period. The daily postal operations carried out in the building are illustrated with archived materials including photos, postal tools and stamps issued during the period, as well as the personal recollections of post office staff who worked there. The exhibition also highlights the distinctive architectural features of the old GPO building and features a collection of models based on the building.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs Ting said, "While the old GPO building ended its mission as the city developed, Hongkong Post remains firmly committed to serving the community. Upholding Hongkong Post's fine tradition, our postal team will continue to provide quality postal services to the public with dedication."
