SFST embarks on official visit to Canada (with photos)

     The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Professor K C Chan, visited Ottawa and Toronto today (April 28, Toronto time) to strengthen ties between Hong Kong and Canada.

     In Ottawa, Professor Chan met with the Finance Minister of Canada, Mr Joe Oliver; the Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mr Tiff Macklem; and Advisor and future Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, Ms Carolyn Wilkins.

     During the meetings, Professor Chan updated the senior officials of Canada's financial regulators and institutions on Hong Kong's latest financial developments, and Hong Kong's role as China's global financial market and offshore Renminbi business centre.

     He also paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Canada, Mr Zhang Junsai.

     In the evening, Professor Chan met with some local community leaders in Toronto who originated from Hong Kong.

     Tomorrow, Professor Chan will meet with representatives from the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and talk to local university students at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He will also attend a luncheon with prominent Canadian business leaders in the financial sector in Toronto.

     As one of the highlights, Professor Chan will speak at the gala of the first ever Hong Kong-Canada Business Achievement Award gala. The purpose of the award is to showcase the success stories of Canadian businesses which have ventured into Hong Kong, thereby promoting further development of business and trade between the two places.
