************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Cheshire Home Shatin made the following announcement today (April 28):

A total of nine patients aged 55 to 95 and a staff member in two infirmary wards (one male ward and one female ward) have presented with fever or respiratory symptoms since April 23 and April 25 respectively. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. Test results of four patients from the female ward were confirmed positive to Parainfluenza Type 1 and the remaining five patients from the male ward were confirmed positive to Influenza A. The patients are being treated under isolation and two of them (one male and one female) have been transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital. The other patients are in stable condition. The staff member concerned is now on sick leave.

Admission and visiting to the ward have been suspended. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the wards concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
