Elderly people commended for active use of ICT (with photos)
************************************************************

Twelve elderly people were commended for using information and communications technology (ICT) actively in their daily life at the presentation ceremony of the Smart Elderly IT Star Awards organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) today (April 17).

The OGCIO launched the Smart Elderly Awards last year and received an encouraging response. To sustain the momentum, the Hong Kong Society for the Aged was commissioned to implement the Smart Elderly IT Star Awards this year. The programme seeks to promote wider use of ICT among the silver-hair community through applauding real-life cases of exemplary use of ICT by the elderly. A total of 115 nominations were received, and from these the judging panel selected 12 Smart Elderly IT Stars.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Miss Susie Ho, said, "The 12 awardees have set good examples in using technology to enhance quality of living."

She encouraged the awardees to share with others their remarkable experiences and inspire more elderly people to lead a digital life and enjoy a fruitful third age.

The stories of how the 12 Smart Elderly IT Stars make active use of ICT have been uploaded to the programme portal (www.e100.hk) and its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/e100.hk).

The presentation ceremony was one of the events of International IT Fest 2014. The International IT Fest, featuring a series of events being held over a fortnight to showcase Hong Kong's ICT development and achievements, aims at reinforcing Hong Kong's position as an ICT hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
