*****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the first public lecture for this year on April 26 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Science Museum on the theme of biomedical engineering.

The RGC has invited Professor Wendy Hsiao, Research Professor of the Teaching Division of the School of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University, and Professor Raymond Tong of the Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Details are as follows:

Time: 2.30pm to 4.30pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum
Language: Cantonese
Free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Professor Hsiao will give a talk titled "Gut microflora, human health and Chinese medicines" and discuss whether gut microbes could dictate the individual's response to drug or Chinese medicine treatment.

Professor Tong will deliver a lecture titled "Hand of Hope", during which he will introduce a training device which is beneficial to stroke patients. With this robotic system, stroke patients can be trained to conduct daily activities. Clinical trials have shown promising results in the functional recovery of stroke patients after the robot hand training.

Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited to deliver public lectures organised by the RGC. These lectures aim at arousing the public's interest in local research development.
