**************************************************

Eight contractors were commended today (April 9) for their outstanding safety performance in 2013 at construction sites of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) at the presentation ceremony of the fifth CEDD Construction Site Safety Award.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Hon Chi-keung, said, "We accord top priority to the safety and health of site personnel as well as members of the public who are affected by our works. To further enhance the caring culture and safety standards at our construction sites, we have implemented a range of new initiatives in recent years, including the launch of an award scheme in 2009 for commendable construction site safety performance by contractors."

Mr Hon said good site safety management has become all the more important in view of the high level of construction output in recent years. He said he hoped all participants would continue to work towards realising the vision of "zero accidents".

There are two types of award under the scheme: quarterly commendation letters and yearly CEDD Construction Site Safety Awards. A total of 42 commendation letters were issued to 25 CEDD contractors to commend their good safety performance in 2013, while eight of them were presented with the yearly safety awards today.

At the ceremony, the CEDD also awarded a plaque to each of the site supervision teams of the eight winning contracts to show appreciation for their distinguished contributions to site safety.
