"Doomsday Party" and "Firestorm" are among the 170 films being featured at the 2014 Dallas International Film Festival, which opened on April 3. Both movies are having their North American premieres and two showings at this 11-day festival.

At the Hong Kong Reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco prior to the screenings of both movies yesterday (April 8, Dallas time), the Director of the Office, Ms Subrina Chow, thanked the Dallas Film Society for supporting Hong Kong movies.

"We are excited to find a partner in the Dallas Film Society, which shares our enthusiasm in bringing more quality Hong Kong movies to Texas.

"In the past 10 years alone, Hong Kong films and film talents have won over 300 international awards. We take great pride in these achievements and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is eager to support this important sector," Ms Chow said.

To promote the long-term development of the Hong Kong film industry, the Hong Kong Government set up the Hong Kong Film Development Fund in 2007.

The Fund provides 40 per cent funding for small and medium-budget films and has so far supported the production of 30 Hong Kong movies, including "Doomsday Party".

"Through financing film productions, the Fund helps to nurture talents and inject new blood into the Hong Kong film industry," Ms Chow said.

"Doomsday Party" is the first commercial feature directed by Ho Hong, who was an honoured guest at the reception. "Mr Ho has been invited to participate in the Narrative Feature Competition of this festival. We hope he will bring home the Grand Jury Prize," she continued.

"Doomsday Party" has already won the 2013 Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum Award, an award that recognised the outstanding potential of the project. The movie was also invited to join last year's Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei.

Another movie featured in this festival is "Firestorm", a blockbuster in both Hong Kong and the Mainland of China. Produced by and starring seasoned Hong Kong artist Andy Lau, "Firestorm" is the directorial debut of veteran screenwriter Alan Yuen.

"Through our partnership with the Dallas Film Society, we look forward to bringing many more good Hong Kong movies to Dallas in the years ahead," Ms Chow said.
