Police stage charity concerts to celebrate its 170th anniversary (with photos)

     More than 1 400 members of the public were presented with delightful music performances for the benefit of charity at the Hong Kong City Hall today (April 1).

     To mark its 170th anniversary, the Police staged two charity concerts to raise fund for the needy and to demonstrate the tradition to serve the community
 
     More than $2.2 million raised by the event went to the Children's Cancer Foundation and the Helping Hand.

     Speaking at the 170th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Police Force Charity Concert, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tsang Wai-hung, expressed gratitude to guest performers, performing groups, volunteers, sponsors and organisations for their contribution to the success of the event.

     Other officiating guests included the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Police Band, Mr Richard Tang Yat-sun.

     Performing in the concert were the Hong Kong Police Band, the Police Choir and the Police Chinese Cultural Club Chinese Orchestra.

     The Police Pipe Band and Silver Band of the Police Band performed a rendition of famous tunes including "Pomp and Circumstances" March No. 1 by Elgar and the Finale of Dvorak's "New World Symphony".

     The Police Chinese Orchestra presented two pieces of traditional Chinese music, "The General's Command" and "Horse Racing". The Police Choir sang "Operation Manhunt" and "Striving for the Future".

     Led by the Assistant Principal Percussionist of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Mr Ronald Chin, the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble performed Chinese Drum Concerto "Flying Dragon and Leaping Tiger".

     Also, internationally renowned singer Frances Yip Lai-yee sang a number of golden oldies.

     Another charity concert will be held at the Hong Kong City Hall tomorrow (April 2) at 8 pm. Prior to the concert, members of the underprivileged groups, non-governmental organisations, Senior Police Call and Junior Police Call as well as guests invited by the performing groups will be offered free admission to the matinee performance.
