Wong Tai Sin District's "In Praise of Serenity and Joy" and Tuen Mun District's "Urban Oasis" outshone their competitors and won the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s Oriental Style Garden Plot Competition and Western Style Garden Plot Competition respectively at the Hong Kong Flower Show 2014.
"In Praise of Serenity and Joy" resembles part of an inner garden of a high-class residence in the Ming dynasty. The garden, entitled "Yanyu", which means "peace and happiness", symbolises the aspiration for a carefree family life. The design incorporates elements of a natural landscape, with a murmuring brook flowing through the pastoral setting. Decorated with artistic rockery and flowers in full bloom, as well as elegant stone furniture, the garden presents a vibrant and vivid scene.
The design of "Urban Oasis" was based on the idea of restoring and developing closed landfills to provide open space and parklands for the nearby residents and create urban oases for the community. In this luxuriant garden, materials salvaged from landfills such as tires are recycled and transformed into furniture and decorations. A variety of herbs and vegetables have been planted in this garden, demonstrating self-sufficiency in urban living - a practice that can contribute to a lower dependence on importing and transporting food from outside sources, thus reducing the carbon footprint - and portraying a green lifestyle.
Designed by staff of the LCSD's District Leisure Services Offices, all entries in the Garden Plot Competitions are now on display at the flower show.
This year's Hong Kong Flower Show has "Blossoms of Joy" as its main theme and is supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as the Major Sponsor. The flower show, which features more than 350,000 flowers and has the kalanchoe as the theme flower, is running until March 16 at Victoria Park.
The LCSD is also presenting a spectacular exhibit, "A Garden of Joy in Hong Kong", which features striking contours and a lively composition. Colourful kalanchoes are used to form a multi-layered parterre alongside other flowering plants to create different scenes of everyday bliss.
Other main attractions include a "Floral Celebration" featuring kalanchoes in a variety of colours and other floral species to contrast with the tulip display; a mosaiculture display entitled "My Home Among the Corals", showcasing marine creatures living in the coral reefs; Brand Hong Kong and Hong Kong Velodrome floral walls; spectacular displays from the Mainland; and interactive photo-taking booths.
A rich diversity of educational and recreational fringe activities are also being held for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages. They include music and cultural performances, floral art demonstrations, cooking demonstrations, green activities workshops, green stalls, guided visits, recreation programmes and fun games.
Admission tickets are being sold at the entrance to the Victoria Park showground throughout the show period. Octopus can be used to pay for admission. Admission tickets are also available at the LCSD's District Leisure Services Offices, and at leisure venues with Leisure Link services except for water sports centres and holiday camps.
Admission fees for the flower show are as follows:
* Normal rate: $14
* Children, students and senior citizens aged 60 or above: $7
* Persons with disabilities and their minders (each person can enjoy the concessionary rate with one minder only): $7
Concessionary rate from Monday to Friday:
* Free admission for senior citizens aged 60 or above.
* Free admission for persons with disabilities and their minders (each person can enjoy the concessionary rate with one minder only).
* Adults in a group of 30 persons or above will be admitted at half rate.
