The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, visited Copenhagen, Denmark on yesterday (March 6, Copenhagen time) where he met relevant officials to discuss waste management and visited waste-to-energy facilities there.

In the morning, Mr Wong first called on the Technical and Environmental Mayor of Copenhagen, Mr Morten Kabell. He also met with the Minister of the Environment of Denmark, Mrs Kirsten Brosbøl, and other officials. Both sides had discussions on waste management policies and infrastructure.

After the meeting, Mr Wong was briefed on the development of the Amager Bakke Waste-to-Energy Plant project. This facility has an innovative architectural design, with its exterior to be integrated with a skiing slope, a walking trail, a climbing wall and a cafe, paired with a high environmental performance and energy efficiency. It will employ moving grate technology to treat about 1 500 tonnes of waste per day and is due to be commissioned in 2017.

Mr Wong then addressed a luncheon meeting jointly organised by the Denmark-Hong Kong Trade Association, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London and Hong Kong Trade Development Council. He also met with Hong Kong students studying in Denmark and exchanged views on environmental issues.

In the afternoon, Mr Wong paid a visit to the newly commissioned Roskilde Waste-to-Energy Plant, which has a specially selected and novel architectural design to blend with the urban context of Roskilde. Using moving grate technology, this modern facility provides electricity, heating and cooling processes to suit the needs of the community in different seasons.

Mr Wong will proceed to his final stop in Malmö, Sweden on March 7 (Copenhagen time).
