The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, continued his visit to the United Kingdom yesterday (March 4, London time) to exchange views with local officials and experts on waste management issues and learn more about thermal waste treatment facilities in the United Kingdom.
In London, Mr Wong first met with representatives from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), a professional institution which provides independent professional advice on environmental policy and waste treatment technologies. Both sides exchanged views on various environmental issues including waste management policies, waste treatment technologies and waste-to-energy facilities.
In the afternoon, Mr Wong was briefed by representatives from Air Products on its waste-to-energy facility in Teesside, which is expected to be in operation in late 2014. The facility will be the first plant to use plasma gasification to treat 950 tonnes of pretreated domestic, commercial and industrial waste per day.
Mr Wong was also briefed on the Lakeside Energy from Waste Plant in London, which commenced operation in 2010 and employs moving grate incineration technology to treat some 1 100 tonnes of mixed and unsorted municipal solid waste per day.
Mr Wong also met with officials from the Mayor of London's Office and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to learn about their overall waste management policy including essential waste treatment infrastructure such as waste-to-energy and landfilling facilities.
Mr Wong departed for Amsterdam, the Netherlands in the evening to continue his visit.
