************************************************************

The Seminar on the First Round of Invitation for Applications for Establishment of Hong Kong Branches of Chinese National Engineering Research Centres and the Re-assessment on Partner State Key Laboratories was successfully held in Hong Kong today (March 4).

The Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong, and the Deputy Director-General, China Science and Technology Exchange Center, State Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Dr Wang Yan, delivered the opening speeches at the seminar.

The seminar had two themes, namely the establishment of more Hong Kong Branches of Chinese National Engineering Research Centres (CNERCs), and the re-assessment of the existing Partner State Key Laboratories (PSKLs).

Speaking at the seminar, Miss Wong said, "Hong Kong Branches of CNERCs and PSKLs approved by MOST have strong research and development capabilities and enjoy leading positions in their respective areas of expertise both in the Mainland and internationally. To further promote science and technology co-operation between the Mainland and Hong Kong, and to uphold the high standards of the existing PSKLs, the Innovation and Technology Commission will organise the first round of invitation for applications for establishment of Hong Kong Branches of CNERCs in 2014, and aim to co-ordinate in 2015-16 the re-assessment of the 12 PSKLs established on or before 2010, as agreed by the Mainland/Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee. The seminar today allows universities and research institutes interested in Hong Kong Branches applications to better understand the application requirements, and the PSKLs to better prepare for the 2015-16 re-assessment exercise."

At the seminar, the Deputy Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Johann Wong; the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Development and Planning of MOST, Mr Cai Wenqin; and the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Basic Research of MOST, Mr Cao Guoying, spoke on the application procedures of the first-round applications for establishment of Hong Kong Branches of CNERCs, the establishment progress of CNERC and overall requirements of Hong Kong Branches, and the overall requirements of the re-assessment on PSKLs respectively.
