LegCo Panel on Environmental Affairs visits waste management facilities in United Kingdom (with photos)
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Environmental Affairs continued its duty visit in Europe today (March 4, London time). During the visit in the United Kingdom (UK) yesterday, the delegation studied the country's experience in planning and operating thermal waste treatment technologies.

The delegation visited the Advanced Plasma Power's pilot plasma gasification plant in Swindon to observe the application of gasification technology. The plant functions as a test plant for users to test their pre-sorted waste or refuse-derived fuel and provides a detailed analysis of the output. In particular, the delegation noticed that precious metal could be recovered by the plant from the processing of waste electronic equipment, such as circuit boards.

The delegation then visited the New Earth Solutions' pyrolysis and gasification plant in Avonmouth in the afternoon. It is an integrated waste treatment and energy recovery facility which uses pyrolysis and gasification to process waste for electricity and heat generation.

Today, members of the delegation will meet with the Mayor of London's Office and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and representatives of two non-governmental organisations, namely the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the United Kingdom Without Incineration Network, and receive briefings by the Teesside.
