Acclaimed zheng artist Chen Anhua to perform in March

     The "Lingnan Music Series" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is preparing to delight Hong Kong Chinese music lovers with Zheng Concert by Chen Anhua this March.

     As one of the founders of the South China stylistic school of zheng music, Chen Anhua has won acclaim as the top player of the zheng in the South China region. In the coming not-to-be-missed concert, Chen will not only perform on the zheng solo, but will also take to the stage with his son Chen Weimin, two yehu and pipa musicians, and a typical Chaozhou xiyue music ensemble.

     The programme will include "Riding the Donkey Backwards" (fanxian mode), "Fish Hawks Dabbling in the Water" (heavy six mode), "As the Waves Wash the Sand" (light three and heavy six mode), "Wild Geese on the Sandbank" (light six mode) and more.

     Chen Anhua is a famous teacher and is currently on the faculty of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, where he is a supervisor in the master's degree programme for zheng. Chen is the author of "South China Zheng Scores" and has published numerous articles on his chosen instrumental genre. Chen was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Chinese Music by the China Nationalities Orchestra Society in 2011, and received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Chinese Zheng from the Zheng Society of the Chinese Musicians Association in 2013.

     Zheng Concert by Chen Anhua will be staged at 8pm on March 23 (Sunday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. Tickets priced $220 and $150 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).      A demonstration lecture (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 3pm on March 22 (Saturday) at the Theatre of the Jao Tsung-I Academy (Address: 800 Castle Peak Road, Kowloon). Chen Anhua will be the demonstrator and Professor Yu Siu-wah will serve as the moderator. Admission is free. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

     Other programmes in the Lingnan Music Series include "A Concert of Chaozhou Gongs and Drums Da luogu" and "A Concert of Chaozhou Xianshi Ensemble Music" by the Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble, "Sounding Treasures" concerts and performances by the Raoping Chiu Chow Opera Troupe of Guangdong and the Sun Hon Kwong Chiu Chow Opera Troupe.
