Clusters of Influenza A and Influenza B cases in Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Siu Lam Hospital made the following announcement today (February 19):

     Seven patients (aged 37 to 59) in a female ward for the severely intellectually disabled had presented with respiratory symptoms since February 17. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and the test results for five patients were positive for Influenza B. The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

     In addition, three patients (aged 36 to 43) in a male ward for the severely intellectually disabled had presented with respiratory symptoms since February 18. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Influenza A. The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to the wards concerned has been suspended and restricted visiting has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the wards are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
