The "Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs" exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum today (February 12) received its 500 000th visitor in the afternoon, breaking the records for attendance of a thematic exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum and daily average attendance of a public museum.
The exhibition has been very popular with the public since its opening on November 8 last year and has recorded a daily average attendance of more than 6 000 within a span of less than 100 days.
The 500 000th visitor to the exhibition was greeted by the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung, and the Executive Director, Charities, of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr Douglas So, and was presented with two souvenir packs given out by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Mrs Fung noted that dinosaur exhibitions are always popular all over the world and especially amongst children, who are often fascinated by the giant prehistoric creatures. The Hong Kong Science Museum has organised several dinosaur exhibitions, among which "Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs" is the largest and best ever held in Hong Kong in terms of scale, content, the number of collaborating parties and international involvement.
The "Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs" exhibition features more than 190 exhibits from 13 institutes in the Mainland and overseas, including life-size dinosaur skeleton models, robotic dinosaurs and interactive exhibits. Furthermore, a 30m-long, 10m-high roaring Daxiatitan binglingi with a swaying head and wagging tail stands in the museum's piazza and has drawn many visitors to the museum over the past three months.
The Hong Kong Science Museum's 1996 dinosaur exhibition "Prehistoric Giants" received more than 430 000 visitors, while the "Dinosaurs Alive!" exhibition held in 1993 attracted more than 410 000 visitors.
Presented by the LCSD and organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum, the exhibition is solely sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is the third exhibition in the 2013 Hong Kong Jockey Club Series.
Members of the public wishing to view the exhibition are advised to plan ahead for their visit arrangements to avoid overcrowding within the two months before the exhibition closes on April 9.
The standard admission fee for the exhibition is $20. Full-time students, people with disabilities and senior citizens aged 60 or above are eligible for half-price concessionary tickets. Free admission on Wednesday is not applicable for this special exhibition. Children under 4 years old are entitled to free admission when accompanied by an adult with tickets. LCSD Museum Pass holders are also entitled to free admission.
Located at 2 Science Museum Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, the exhibition is open from 10am to 7pm on weekdays, and from 10am to 9pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays).
