Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in North District Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for North District Hospital made the following update today (January 28) regarding earlier announcements on confirmation of carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a medical ward and a surgical ward respectively:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. Two more male patients from the medical ward (aged 73 and 87) have been confirmed to be VRE carriers, both without clinical symptoms. Both patients have been discharged.

     In addition, two male patients (aged 78 and 87) from the surgical ward have been confirmed to be VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. One of the patients is still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition. The other patient has been discharged.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
