Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in New Territories West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster made the following update today (January 23) regarding earlier announcements on confirmation of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in the Medicine and Geriatrics Wards of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) and Pok Oi Hospital (POH) respectively:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, TMH and POH have performed contact tracing and confirmed one more 61-year-old male patient and one more 95-year-old female patient as VRE carriers respectively, both without clinical symptoms. The male patient is still hospitalised with stable condition while the female patient had been discharged earlier.

     The two hospitals will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the wards. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
