The spokesperson for Pok Oi Hospital (POH) made the following update today (January 21) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a Medicine and Geriatrics Ward:
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing. One more 90-year-old female patient has been confirmed as a VRE carrier without clinical symptoms. The patient concerned has been isolated for further treatment and is in a serious condition due to her own underlying illness.
The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation on the ward. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
