************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Tuen Mun Hospital made the following update today (January 18) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a Medicine and Geriatrics Ward:

In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing. Three more male patients (aged 41 to 66) have been confirmed as VRE carriers but without clinical symptoms. Two of the patients have been discharged earlier. The remaining patient is in serious condition due to his underlying illness, and is now under medical surveillance and isolation.

The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
