Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in New Territories West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster made the following update today (January 16) regarding an earlier announcement on confirmation of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in the Medicine and Geriatrics Wards of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) and Pok Oi Hospital (POH):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the TMH and POH have performed contact tracing and confirmed one more 66-year-old male patient and one more 86-year-old female patient as VRE carriers. Both patients are without clinical symptoms and were discharged earlier.

     The two hospitals will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation on the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
