The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (January 15) the January 2014 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Air Cargo Statistics" and "External Debt Statistics of Hong Kong for 2008 to 2012".
"Air Cargo Statistics"
The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest and most advanced airports. It consolidates Hong Kong's position as a hub of commerce and plays a very important role in the development of Hong Kong as a logistics centre. In terms of international air cargo throughput, the Hong Kong International Airport continued to rank first among all airports in the world in 2012. This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the air cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2012 and briefly highlights the more recent performance of the industry by making reference to the quarterly air cargo statistics from the first quarter of 2011 to the third quarter of 2013.

"External Debt Statistics of Hong Kong for 2008 to 2012"
External Debt (ED) statistics provide useful information for international financial surveillance. They facilitate data users in monitoring the development of an economy's external liabilities and hence its debt servicing obligations over time. Over the past five years, the gross ED of Hong Kong increased by 49.4%, from $5,347.0 billion at end-2008 to $7,987.5 billion at end-2012. This was mainly attributable to the significant increase in ED of the banking sector.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.
