The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (January 7) expressed his profound sadness at the passing of Sir Run Run Shaw.
"Sir Run Run was a legend in the media and the film industry and a renowned philanthropist. Year after year, he made countless donations to Hong Kong, the Mainland and many parts of the world for the benefit of education, scientific and technological research, medical and social welfare services, as well as culture and art.
"On scientific research, in 2002 Sir Run Run established the Shaw Prize, also known as the Nobel of the East, in recognition of scientists with outstanding achievements in astronomy, life science and medicine, and the mathematical sciences.
"His extraordinary dedication and competence earned him great respect in the community. The Government and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Run Run and extend our deepest condolences to his family," Mr Leung said.
Sir Run Run was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 1998.
