Over 100 courses, ranging from Chinese and Western musical instrument foundation classes to diverse music workshops and parent and child classes, will offer a wide variety of choices for applicants of different ages. The courses, to be conducted in Cantonese, will be held from March to July.

Newly launched courses for this term include the parent and child series "Kingdom of Musical Terminology", which will introduce frequently used musical terms such as "pianissimo" and "andante" through interactive activities. Another new course is "Clarinet Ensemble Playing", in which people aged 15 or above and who have completed the Music Office's outreach clarinet foundation II classes, or those who have already acquired equivalent playing standard, can learn and enjoy the fun of playing music in groups.

The regular workshop series include the parent and child series "Wonderful Music World of 4Bs", which features the lives and important works of four maestros, namely Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bartok, in four workshops.

There are also workshop series for ocarina, guitar and keyboard playing as well as vocal singing, aural training, music theory and ensemble playing for Chinese musical instruments, Western strings, flute and saxophone. All are available for different age groups. The course fees for the workshop series range from $252 to $630.

The Outreach Music Interest Courses also provide basic training on xiao, dizi, liuyeqin, pipa, zhong-ruan, yangqin, zheng, erhu, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, percussion, violin, viola and cello. The non-workshop course fee is $840, and these courses are suitable for adults, parents, teenagers and university students as well as primary and secondary students.

The courses will be conducted in small groups at different venues throughout Hong Kong. They are the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Tuen Mun Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library, Pei Ho Street Sports Centre (Sham Shui Po) and the Music Office's music centres at Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Sha Tin, Kwun Tong and Tsuen Wan.

Online applications are now available at the Music Office's website www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/CulturalService/MusicOffice/en/events_2013_12_20.php . Course prospectuses and application forms are also available at all performing venues of the LCSD and music centres of the Music Office. The deadline for applications is January 21.
