Update on cluster of Clostridium Difficile toxin cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (January 3) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Clostridium Difficile infection in a neurosurgery ward:

     One more 57-year-old female patient in the ward has presented with diarrhea symptoms. Appropriate test were arranged for the patient and the test result was positive to Clostridium Difficile toxin. The patient is being treated under isolation and is in a stable condition.

     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the concerned ward are under close surveillance.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
