Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (January 2) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a medical ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. Six patients (aged 80 to 90, two male and four female) were confirmed as carriers of VRE today but without clinical symptoms. Out of the six patients, two have been transferred to Kowloon Hospital and three are still hospitalised in QEH. All are under medical surveillance and isolation in stable condition. The remaining patient has been discharged.

     QEH will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
