Cluster of Clostridium Difficile toxin cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following announcement today (January 2):

     Three patients (aged 41 to 75) of a female neurosurgery ward had presented with diarrhoea symptoms since December 27, 2013. Appropriate tests were arranged for the patients and their results were positive for Clostridium Difficile toxin. The patients are being treated under isolation. One of them is in critical condition due to her own illness, while the rest are in stable condition.

     Infection control measures in the ward have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
