Police facilitate the peaceful and orderly conduct of January 1 public event
******************************************************

With the co-operation of the public and the organiser, the public procession and public meetings today (January 1) were generally conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, a Police spokesman said.

Police noted that there were different street stations on the procession route and most of them were co-operative and followed Police arrangement. However, a few people ignored Police¡¦s advice and tried to move an erected structure onto the traffic lanes of Hennessy Road in Causeway Bay, which would cause unreasonable obstruction to the procession and endanger public safety and public order. Police therefore had to take resolute actions and make the most appropriate arrangement to ensure that the procession was conducted safely.

Police were grateful to local residents and road users for their understanding and tolerance with regard to any inconvenience caused during the event.

Police reiterate we respect the public's freedoms of expression, speech and assembly and always handle public meetings, demonstrations and processions in a fair, just and impartial manner in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong.

It is the policy of Police to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order. Members of the public should comply with the laws of Hong Kong and maintain social order when expressing their views.
