The Hong Kong Space Museum's latest 3D full-dome show, "We are Aliens 3D", was launched today (January 1). The show explores planets and stars in the universe and the search for life in other worlds.
Human civilisation has spread across our planet and today more than 7 billion people are linked globally in terms of the ecosystem, economic interaction, cultural activities and more. Many still wonder if other civilisations have formed elsewhere in the universe, and the thought that we are not alone is so compelling that it drives people forward in search of answers. One typical example is the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence project, which can be traced back to as early as 1896.
Tenacious life is common on Earth, where microbes thrive under extreme conditions ranging from ocean floors with sulphur-rich water super-heated at 400 degrees Celsius through to the cold and dry deserts of Antarctica and even places 4 kilometres deep within the planet's crust. All these areas appear to be utterly alien and hostile. What sort of alien life could exist beyond Earth?
To hunt for life elsewhere in the universe, scientists have long been conducting research based on an understanding of life on Earth. The journey in "We are Aliens 3D" will explore the most likely havens of life, starting from neighbouring worlds such as Mars and Europa and continuing through to other planetary systems beyond our solar system. If intelligent beings exist in these places, could they be searching for humans? Perhaps one day we may finally connect with a vast network of intelligent civilisations scattered among the stars. They would no longer be aliens but neighbours in the universe.
The 25-minute 3D full-dome show "We are Aliens 3D" will be screened until June 30 and is scheduled for 2.40pm and 6.10pm daily at the museum's Stanley Ho Space Theatre. There will be an additional screening at 11.10am on Sundays and public holidays. The museum is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
Tickets are available at the Hong Kong Space Museum Box Office and at all URBTIX outlets for $24 (front stalls) and $32 (stalls). Full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above and people with disabilities are eligible for a half-price concession.
