HAD offers assistance to people affected by fire broke out in Continental Mansion in North Point
***********************************************************

In response to media enquiries, the Home Affairs Department (HAD) made the following response:

The HAD is making every effort to provide assistance to people affected by the No. 3 alarm fire that broke out at Continental Mansion, 290-304 King's Road, North Point this morning (December 29).

Eastern District Office (EDO) has opened the Causeway Bay Community Centre for those people in need. As at 6pm, 40 affected persons have registered with the inter-departmental emergency help desk set up by EDO and the Social Welfare Department at the centre. Helpdesks have also been set up in three hospitals including Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Ruttonjee Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital where the injured were admitted.

A licensed guesthouse on the 3/F of the building was also affected by the fire. The officers of the Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA) of Home Affairs Department conducted a site visit today to follow up on the case. The OLA received complaints against the guesthouses in the building and actively conducted investigations. In the past three years, five prosecutions were instituted against those guesthouses and five persons were convicted.

A spokesman for the HAD said, "We will continue to look after the needs of affected residents, provide assistance as appropriate and actively follow up on the case."
