Youth Exchange Session discusses municipal solid waste charging (with photos)
*******************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Commission on Youth:

The Commission on Youth (CoY) organised a Youth Exchange Session at the Youth Square today (December 19). The Chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development, Mr Bernard Chan, attended the session and exchanged views with youths on the topic of municipal solid waste charging.

"Municipal solid waste charging is an important issue of sustainability that has an impact on every citizen in the community, including the young people. The objective of waste charging is to provide an economic incentive in inducing behavioural changes to achieve waste reduction at source. Each of us can do a small part and give some creativity to meet the above objective, e.g. by rethinking our consumerist lifestyle and making some small and simple changes in our daily life. All these can contribute to reduction in waste disposal as well as promote a simpler, healthier and less wasteful lifestyle to the benefit of ourselves and the community," Mr Chan said.

Mr Chan added, "I am happy to see the active participation of the youths at the forum this afternoon and the valuable views expressed which would serve as useful references for the Council for Sustainable Development. I believe that with their creativity and enthusiasm, young people will continue to actively promote the reduction of waste at source and recycling of resources. They will also contribute towards creating green business opportunities and help promote the sustainable development of Hong Kong."

The Convenor of the Working Group on International Exchanges and Conferences under the CoY, Miss Phoebe Tang, said the CoY will continue to organise exchange sessions and invite government representatives to attend so that youths will have more opportunities to exchange views with them on topics of concern.
