The Hong Kong Observatory launched the "Automatic Regional Weather Forecast in Hong Kong" webpage today (December 18). This new weather service provides location-specific weather forecasts in Hong Kong.
The new webpage features hourly forecasts of air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction and wind speed at various locations in Hong Kong for the next seven days. Regional distribution of weather elements, in still picture as well as animation sequence, is readily available on the webpage and based on the geographic information system. By selecting a location, users can see the time charts of weather elements at the location concerned for each hour, together with the chance of rain over Hong Kong for each day.
The automatic weather forecasts are updated twice a day, roughly before midnight and noon, using data from numerical weather prediction models. The output from these computer models is processed and integrated automatically to generate the location-specific forecasts so that the public can better grasp weather changes at the regional level.
